What type of siding is the best?
This question is the most commonly asked
question we get. First off they all have their
own pros and cons and any answer you get will be
somebody's opinion (My opinion is Steel)
Lets start of with steel siding my favorite.
Steel Siding Pros
- Maintenance Free - No need to paint, washes off
with rain.
- Durable - High
resistance to impacts.
- Fire Ratings - will not
catch fire or burn.
- Rows Lay Straighter -
Does not buckle bend or warp.
- Weatherproof - Can be
buried underground in most cases very close
to ground (will not wick up moisture.)
- Steel Siding Can Be Painted
- If you wish to change colors you will not
have to re-side complete house.
- Steel Siding Options -
There are several options with styles and
colors to simulate any type of siding on the
market today.
- Inexpensive - Compared
to wood or cement board siding
- Adding Accessories -
Unlike vinyl siding or cement siding when
adding shutters or exterior light fixtures
all you need is sheet metal screws no need
to find a stud.
Steel Siding Cons
- Installation - Harder to cut - Ends are
sharp - cut ends need to be lapped this means you cannot use a piece with both ends cut.
Steel Siding also takes longer to install. Cutting Blades are
expensive - Noisy when cutting panels.
- Replacement - Replacing
1 piece of steel siding in the middle of a
wall can be a daunting project every lap has
a Steel groove and it is almost
impossible to remove just 1 piece.
- Steel is not Impenetrable
- Steel siding will dent with large impacts
2" hail or better, your car, swing set
tipping over, Stacking firewood - (Just a
few things we have seen) As noted above it
is a pain to replace although it can be
done.
Vinyl siding would be my second favorite provided the panel thickness is .046 or greater.
Vinyl Siding Pros
- Maintenance Free - No need to paint, washes off with rain.
- Installation - Easy To
Cut - very forgiving can bend panels to get
into tight spots - less scrap almost every
piece can be used.
- Weatherproof - Can be
buried underground in most cases very close
to ground (will not wick up moisture.)
- Siding Options - Vinyl Siding has the widest array of colors, Styles, Exposures, and
wood grain textures.
- Maintenance - Very
simple to replace 1 piece of siding where
ever on your home it may be.
- Inexpensive - The most
inexpensive exterior siding product on the
market today.
Vinyl Siding Cons
- Durability - Any panel under a .046 in my opinion is not worth putting on a home - even a .046 panel will crack with 1" hail most panels under .046 will crack or warp just by looking at it.(joke)
Sorry do not buy cheap vinyl. ---- .046 is good
quality -- I have it on my own home because my
wife liked the style and color steel did not
offer us.
- Fading - Color does
fade especially on the sunny side of the
home with the darker colors usually takes 10
years or better for a quality panel to fade.
Even after it does fade it is not noticeable
unless a panel is removed or compared to a
new panel.
- Replacement - Again
with the color fading it is hard to match a
faded panel with a new one. We can pull a
piece anywhere on the home the less
noticeable the better.

I will give a brief overview or my opinion on cement siding and wood
siding next. But first I wanted to let you know Steel Siding and Vinyl
Siding are the two main types of exterior siding we install. We often
turn down siding jobs that involve installing wood or cement board
(unless we need the work) we will however perform small wood siding
repairs.
Wood Siding: It has to be Cedar Siding - Cedar siding is naturally resistant to rot and bugs.
Cedar should be stained and not painted. (although it is acceptable to
paint.) Cedar has a natural wood look and is fairly simple to replace pieces if they rot
or get damaged. Cedar siding is very expensive and must be maintained.
Every seam, every window, or penetration must be sealed on a regular
basis. You will also need to seal / stain regularly. (steel and vinyl are made to
overlap and shed water from one channel to the next and the finish is
permanent - Steel or vinyl should not ever deteriorate.)I personally
love cedar siding and would rate it higher than steel if it were not for
the maintenance involved.
Cement Siding: All I can say is "Masonite".
Engineers have been trying to perfect a cement siding board for years
changing formulas every couple years and telling everyone this is the
next newest and greatest siding ever manufactured. This time it may well
be true. But any of the cement siding products on the market today just
have not been tested long enough in the real world for me to give an
honest opinion. If you are seriously considering installing a cement
board siding panel on your home look at the warranty and installation
instructions. Like what happens if a nail pops and lets moisture in will
the panel deteriorate? Remember you will have 100's or 1000's of nail
heads that need to be filled even if it is a hidden fastener
installation. I have read installation procedures where you need to keep
the panel 4" away from the ground or roof surfaces why would this be?
well it seems to me the panel may wick up moisture and rot. I would also
only look at siding contractors certified through the manufacturer to
install the siding panel and get a written warranty from both the siding
contractor as well as the manufacturer and a copy of the certification
document. Sooner or later I am sure the engineers will get it right.
